Town gets Sunday parking discount as part of bid to boost local economy

Royal Tunbridge Wells Together [RTW Together], the group charged with delivering the Business Improvement District [BID] scheme, has negotiated a three-month discounted parking trial with the Borough Council [TWBC].

RTW Together say from October 6, visitors to the town centre on a Sunday will be charged a flat rate of just £2.

This provides a saving of more than £4.00 on a six-hour stay, which currently costs £6.30. One-hour parking will still be available at the current rate of £1.60 (or £1.30 using the app).

The scheme is deisgned to encourage visitors to the town and to give businesses and Sunday traders a boost

The offer will be available in the six largest Council-run car parks in the town centre: Meadow Road, Linden Park, Major York’s Road, Great Hall Arcade, Crescent Road and Royal Victoria Place.

Karen Pengelly, Town Centre Manager at RTW Together, said the initiative will be promoted widely around Kent, Surrey and Sussex with an advertising campaign in magazines, social media and online in an attempt to draw people in.

The campaign will highlight some of the many reasons to visit Royal Tunbridge Wells such as shopping and restaurants and theatre.

Mrs Pengelly said: “Royal Tunbridge Wells is a fabulous town to visit and explore. Whether it’s a special occasion Sunday lunch, a browse around some fantastic shops or a matinee at one of our theatres, there are tons of reasons to visit.

“This is just the first of many steps that we will be taking to ensure that we promote and support the town centre and all the businesses who have come together to create the Business Improvement District.”

She continued: “It has taken a lot of discussions and hard work to get to this point so we need to work just as hard to ensure it’s a success and that we drive up our Sunday footfall figures.”

Council Leader Alan McDermott added: “The £2 Sunday parking offer in the town’s central car parks is great news and I’m very pleased that we have been able to support Royal Tunbridge Wells Together with this promotion.

“Taking advantage of the offer to ‘Linger for Longer’ is an excellent idea and will give people a chance to enjoy the shops and restaurants at a more leisurely pace.”
