Terry Waite offers fascinating insights into Probus meeting

He described his imprisonment in Beirut by Hezbollah terrorists from 1987-91, the first four years of which were in solitary confinement.

He was acting as the special envoy of the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie, when he embarked on the rescue mission in Lebanon to try to secure the release of four hostages.

Mr Waite, who is now 80, subsequently published a bestselling book about the experience called Taken on Trust.

Adrian Moss, President of Royal Tunbridge Wells Probus, said: “Terry’s talk to some 70 members and their guests was fascinating in terms of the poignancy of his experience and the lack of resentment of a truly remarkable man.”

The Probus Club of Royal Tunbridge Wells meets once a month for fellowship, conversation and lunch, followed by talks on topics of interest.
