The franchise holder, which serves Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge stations, completed the venture in Derby alongside firms Eversholt Rail and Bombardier.

As part of the revamp 83,000 seat covers were dry cleaned, 20,500 litres of paint have been applied, and seven miles of carpet were replaced. Each train required three weeks of work and the entire project took three years.

This was completed on the Class 375 fleet, which were introduced in 2004. By contract, the trains must be given a deep clean in this style every 15 years.

The Networker, an older style train type which still commonly serve Tunbridge Wells, were not refurnished this time and may well be phased out after a new rail-franchise contract is awarded from November this year.

David Statham, Managing Director of Southeastern, said: ‘Our 625,000 daily passengers deserve the highest levels of comfort and that’s why our trains have been renovated.

‘We are very proud of our teams who have worked incredibly hard over the past three years to ensure trains have been refurbished to the highest standards.’

The company has also recently spent £1.1million expanding the car park at Staplehurst railway station to create another 300 spaces.
