Timothy Mason died on March 16 from meningitis and complications resulting from sepsis. On the day of his death he was taken to the hospital, treated, discharged and then readmitted.

Mr Mason was studying at Sussex Downs College as an apprentice industrial electrical engineer. He lived in Tunbridge Wells with his father Gavin, a furniture restoration specialist, and mother Fiona who is PA to the Lord Mayor-elect of London. He had two brothers, Alex, 27, and Nick, 23.

According to the family’s legal team at Enable Law, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust have admitted liability.

The Trust is said to have accepted that: “On the balance of probabilities had TM’s condition been appropriately treated, he would not have died…

“…had a sepsis screening tool been carried out on TM’s arrival in triage, it is highly likely that his care would have been flagged to a senior doctor in the A&E department sooner, which may have resulted in a different discharge and management decision.

“In addition, TM may well have received antibiotics earlier. Earlier antibiotic therapy is known to be associated with lower mortality and better outcomes.”

The Trust said it was unable to comment ahead of the Coroner’s Inquest in Maidstone.
