High tees as Pantiles Rotary golfers raise £10k for charity

THE annual Pantiles Rotary Charity Golf Day at The Nevill Golf Club proved another great success, raising more than £10,000 for a variety of worthy causes.

The Pickering Cancer Drop-in Centre in Monson Road is set to benefit by £6,000, with the remainder being contributed to other charities yet to be announced.

A total of 92 golfers split into 23 teams of four began with a shotgun start, the groups teeing off simultaneously from different holes after club marshal John Benoy blasted the air horn.

The sporting action was followed by a lavish luncheon and then an auction commandeered by John Pilcher.

The prizes on offer included a week’s stay in a Yorkshire holiday cottage, a round of golf with former professional Paul Way, a trip around a gin distillery, and meals out with a chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce or vintage Austin Shearline.

BSR Bespoke Accountancy of Tunbridge Wells was the event’s main sponsor for the third year in a row, while professional photographer David Bartholomew gave his services free of charge.

Over five years, the occasion has raised £40,000 thanks to the efforts of John Benoy, Mike Tunnel, Chris Bennett and his wife Susan.

Last week Chris, the club Treasurer, who has run the golf day for the five years, was presented with the Paul Harris Fellows Award, the highest accolade for a member of Rotary.
