Everything's coming up poppies for Royal British Legion appeal

Since launching in October, organisers have reported unprecedented support for the Remembrance campaign – which helps fund the Royal British Legion’s work.

The Tunbridge Wells campaign has already taken £46,000 – up 24 per cent from the £37,000 donated at this time last year.

Martin Bagge, Poppy Appeal Organiser in Tunbridge Wells, said sales worked out towards being £1 per head of the town’s population.

“Having the centenary made a difference by making people more aware,” he told the Times.

“People were generous in supporting us. It is fabulous to see this significant increase on what we had last year.

“Now we want this to continue and we need more volunteers, there are a variety of ways in which they can help.”

The Royal British Legion help improve the lives of former servicemen and servicewomen. This can include financial, emotional and social support.

Many in the charity are former members of the armed forces but some, such as Mr Bagge, have no connection and are simply looking to help out.

The Poppy Appeal is considered to run from October to the following September. Poppy sales provide the crux of the year’s fundraising total but other events are held to boost the takings such as picnics and sponsored walks.

There were similar scenes in Southborough, where the Poppy Appeal has managed to already raise £4,687.38, compared to around £3,000 last year.

And in Tonbridge, where the local Legion branch is on course to raise £43,000 – compared to the £37,000 in 2017/18.

Jenny Lewis, Organiser of the Southborough appeal, said: “We have had a lot of support from the High Street, with great displays in places like the tailor’s Hardman & Hemming, Pets Fayre, The Salon hairdressers, Earl Grey Tearoom.

“The cubs were out in force for the Remembrance service, collecting from the public before we marched down the High Street, and the Lions Club were involved too.”

YOUNGER members are being encouraged to join the Royal British Legion to help with future Poppy Appeals. Anyone able to offer time in a variety of roles, please contact Martin Bagge on 07989 575175.
