An elderly woman has died after she became trapped in a smoke-filled house in Mount Sion, Tunbridge Wells.

Kent Police and Kent Fire and Rescue Service are currently on the scene investigating after being called in the early hours of Thursday morning [August 16].

The woman in her 80s has been named locally as Peggy Northwood. She was found at the address and taken to Tunbridge Wells Hospital where she later died.

Three fire engines were sent to the scene, arriving within minutes of the initial call. Firefighters entered the house wearing breathing apparatus to evacuate the woman.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named when approached by the Times, said: ‘Nothing happens round here and it was a surprise to hear the news.’
