A COMPANY near Tunbridge Wells is calling on primary school pupils to design ‘the best classroom ever’ and win a £250 prize to spend on essential supplies for their own school in the face of budget cuts to education provision.
JBH Refurbishments, which fits out schools and commercial premises across the South East, launched the competition at Staplehurst primary school as part of its 15th anniversary celebrations. The funding is available in two categories, for key stages one and two.
Babs Hubbard, Director of JBH Refurbishments, hopes the venture will encourage young people to explore construction careers later in life.
“We chose to offer this prize because we are very aware that budget cuts in schools have meant teachers are having to sacrifice essential classroom equipment,” she said. “This is fun, creative and educational. The idea behind the competition is to create a buzz among young people for designing and building, starting with their classroom.
“They will need to put both their methodical and creative skills to the test to create a space that suits their interests and addresses the practical needs of a class.
“We hope the thought process could inspire the next generation of architects, engineers, builders, interior designers, carpenters and other skilled trades.”
The company says there is a lack of skilled labour in the UK and believes more needs to be done to promote construction jobs to young people – and in particular to encourage more women.
The deadline for entries is March 29. Schools can download the information pack, which include templates, from JBH Refurbishments.
