TUNBRIDGE WELLS RFC raised £700 at their annual Boxing Day match in support of Wooden Spoon, rugby’s largest children’s charity.
The club, who became an official partner of Wooden Spoon during the summer, held a prize draw and sold the charity’s socks.
It also raised funds to support the club’s Wooden Spoon ambassador, James Gwinnett, who is running the London Marathon on behalf of the charity.
Proceeds go directly to helping local projects – from sensory rooms, specialist playgrounds and sports activity areas to respite, medical and community care.
Wooden Spoon works to transform the lives of children with disabilities or facing disadvantage across the UK and Ireland, funding around 70 projects each year.
Since it was founded in the wake of England’s poor Five Nations campaign in 1983, it has distributed more than £24million, helping over a million young people.
A large crowd at St Marks watched the Club XV defeat the Chairman’s invitation side 27-21. Club and international legend Martin Corry drew the raffle.
Martin, who learned his game at Tunbridge Wells and made his senior debut for them aged 17, played more than 300 top flight games and went on to captain England and the British Lions, winning 71 caps in total.
