Wishing tree grows at refugee party

Tonbridge Welcomes Refugees hosted a fun-packed family event on Sunday to celebrate Refugee Week.

The One World Day festival held at the Chequerboard community space in Tonbridge included live music, games, refreshments and speakers.

The event literally opened with a bang, thanks to the drummers of local band Bloco Fogo, who created a carnival atmosphere. There were also musicians from Tanzania and Iraq, and a number of speakers who described their experiences as refugees, or working with refugees.

The event also included a wish tree where people could leave messages. One said: “I wish the world becomes a better place for everyone.” Another stated: “Let’s help each other whatever the boundaries,” and one simply said: “Peace.”
