What on Earth? Litter pick finds rubbish items around village

MORE THAN 30 volunteers of all ages came along to help pick up several bags of rubbish in Rusthall on Saturday [April 22] to coincide with Earth Day.

The activity focused on the east side of the village to include the Toad Rock area, Denny Bottom, the Commons and Rusthall Road. Some 24 bin bags were filled with discarded items including a bicycle seat, a toilet cistern and a potty training seat.

The Village Association plan to hold another event later in the year focusing on the western side, followed by a social activity.

Association Chair Alex Britcher said: “It was a brilliant day. We are so grateful to everyone who came along on a rather soggy Saturday morning to help clean the village.

“We were overwhelmed with how many people came to join in. Despite the weather, which decided to rain at the exact time the litter pick was on, everyone was so enthusiastic and worked so incredibly hard.

“I’ve heard that Cllr Thelma Huggett was like a mountain goat scampering up onto the rocks to collect cans and bottles.”

The event was supported by Sodexo and Biffa who provided equipment on the day for the volunteers and arranged for the rubbish to be collected and disposed of.
