ARGOS, the UK’s leading general merchandise retailer, will be opening a digital store inside Sainsbury’s supermarket in Tonbridge on December 9.

It is one of ten new digital Argos stores set to open in existing Sainsbury’s outlets, and was hailed as ‘fantastic news’ by the store’s manager, Pete Brown. He added: “It will be great for my store and the Argos brand, as otherwise the nearest one is in Tunbridge Wells. Customers will have a more diverse choice all in one location. It will prove to be a great offer to Tonbridge.”

The collaboration of the two major companies will result in approximately 20 new jobs for the town and will provide access to the combined ranges including over 20,000 non-grocery products available for an instant buy in store via tablets or ordered for collection within hours.

An additional 20,000 products will be able to be ordered for home delivery.

The move has been the result of Sainsbury’s purchase of the Home Retail Group, owner of Argos, for £1.4 billion on September 2 this year.

Commenting on the tie-up, Mike Coupe, Chief Executive of Sainsbury’s, said: “It will bring something new and different to our customers, and fit well with our strategy of making our supermarkets more convenient.”

Originating in 1869 by founder John Sainsbury, the famous food and beverage retailer operates over 1,200 stores in the UK, ranging from convenience stores to supermarkets. Argos itself has over 750 stores in the UK.
