VOTERS in Southborough and High Brooms will head to the polling booth next week to elect a new Town Council representative following the resignation of former deputy-chairman Glenn Lester.
Mr Lester, who was a vocal advocate of the Southborough Hub Project – which required the demolition of the Royal Victoria Hall – resigned in June, stating he was ‘tired of the party politics’ in the Town Council and balancing commitments.
At the time he told Southborough News: “I have been struggling with work and council commitments.
“I also became tired of all the party politics, there seems to be a desire to put party before community.”
His resignation left a vacancy in the ward of Southborough East and High Brooms, which has an electorate of just under 3,000.
The Southborough Hub development has split opinion and this has been reflected along party lines, with Conservative councillors, such as Mr Lester, generally supportive, with labour campaigning against it.
The three candidates hoping to be elected in Mr Lester’s place on September 7 are Allen Lear, Liberal Democrats; Alain Lewis, Labour and Conservative Judith Symes.
