THE Tonbridge Winter Warmer disco will be held on Saturday (January 13) at a new, more central venue, The New Telegraph Club on Priory Road.
The event is organised by Tonbridge Calling, who established the town’s free summer music festival in 2016. The group is ‘determined to provide footloose townsfolk with an opportunity to shake a leg’.
Tonbridge Calling hope that, following the demise of the town’s only nightclub on Christmas Eve, the Winter Warmer may pave the way for more regular dance nights.
The nightclub – variously known as Ice, SOS and The Amp – in the Hub Creative Space on Avebury Avenue held a final ‘Christmas jumper’ party on -December 24 before the site is turned into flats.
Following the demise of MoJo’s – formerly the Station House and Southeastern, now the Clock House tapas restaurant – and The Wharf, which was also converted into -apartments, the town now finds itself without a dancing venue.
Mark Hood of Tonbridge Calling says: “We hope to see familiar faces from other former dancehall venues such as The Wharf in need of their dance fix.
“We all like to hit the dance floor at the weekend to wash away the rest of the week, and we decided in the absence of an -alternative we would provide one.”
He added: “We hope we can hold regular events and this will be our first foray at a town centre location.”
The evening will feature a range of musical tastes, from indie and ska to disco; members of the Facebook group were asked to help create the soundtrack by suggesting their favourite floor-fillers.
Mark said: “Since the other venues have shut there is a void and we are going to fill it.
“We want everyone who enjoys the August event to come along and say hello and join us on the dancefloor.
“The Telegraph Club is a fantastic venue – and we are really grateful that they are hosting us.”
The Winter Warmer, which runs from 8-11.45pm, costs £5 for over-18s.
But 16 and 17-year-olds can attend if they are accompanied by an adult.
