THE Angel Community Garden has been -awarded a silver medal by the Kent Wildlife Trust – a year on from winning a bronze award. Now they are going for gold in 2018.
Three years ago, volunteers began clearing a derelict piece of land near Sainsbury’s in order to create a bee-friendly garden.
One of the volunteers, Fred Long, recalls: “The Tonbridge & Malling branch of Friends of the Earth and Councillor Sarah Spence thought it a good idea to participate in the organisation’s Bee Cause campaign to try to make the town a happier place.
“We work in partnership with the Angel Centre, who have been very generous with their assistance.”
Last year the team developed an adjoining sensory garden, designed by the Building Dementia Friendly Tonbridge group.
This coincided with the restoration of the adjacent Giant Chess Chequerboard.
Fred adds: “We are emboldened by the many residents who stop by to say how beautiful it looks. A gold medal next year is within reach if more volunteers come forward, we’ll give it our best shot to win.”
