A new float therapy centre in Tunbridge Wells is a part of an emerging trend of businesses offering ‘experiences’ in town centres.
Simply Float, in Monson Road, provides physical and mental relief to customers who relax in water inside designated pods in one hour sessions.
Tom Snow opened the shop with partner Jess Sanchez on January 5 with no previous experience. He said: “We have not done too much publicity, but we have had a good response and everyone has been really positive.”
Water inside the pod matches the customer’s body temperature. Throughout the session, cortisol drops into the water, which stimulates a calm and happy feeling.
Mr Snow advises customers try two or three sessions to get used to the sensation of floating and having nothing to stimulate thought for an hour. “I lost my leg in a motorbike accident,” continued Mr Snow, “and I discovered the benefits of floating 18 months ago.
“I really struggled with work and floating helped me cope with the muscular pain. I discovered it when I was living in New Zealand, and coming back I found the nearest centres are in Brighton and London.
“I thought there was a gap in the market.” A range of customers have come into the shop
since it opened, with some suffering from broken limbs and others finding it useful to treat anxiety or a ‘cheat’ way to meditate.
After trialling the treatment, customers are then encouraged to come once a week. Lights and music are also used for effect.
Simply Float is a good example of an activity based business opening in Tunbridge Wells as traditional shops close.
Mr Snow added: “I know from personal experience how fantastic online shopping is and unless it’s something people need to look at, it is easier to complete it online.
“But you can’t buy experiences online. Floating seems really popular and it has been growing rapidly in the US in the past five years.” A single session at Simply Float costs
£60 and the centre takes bookings from 7.30am until 8pm.
