Residents want pub garden barred

PLANS to develop a new beer garden on Tonbridge High Street have sparked anger from neighbouring residents, who are concerned about the disruptive impact of late night noise.

The Gatehouse, previously branded as the Slug and Lettuce, is currently undergoing a £250,000 renovation by the Stonegate Pub Company and is due to open on November 13.

But its plans to convert a section of the car park on Lyons Crescent into a large beer garden next year have raised concerns from nearby residents, with 13 objections currently posted on the Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council online planning application.

One complaint has raised the issue of the disruptive noise levels that a substantial beer garden would create. Others have expressed concerns over the encroachment of neighbour’s privacy, as the extensions means the venue will creep nearer to residential areas.

Louise Reid, Head of Planning for Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, said: “The Council has received a planning application to use the area to the rear of the Slug and Lettuce as a beer garden.  The application along with all comments received will be considered by members of the Planning Committee in due course.”
