Construction work has started on the new Bishop Chavasse Church of England Primary School in Tonbridge, which will open in September.
State of the art temporary buildings are being installed on part of the site that will house the permanent building in Tudeley Lane, South Tonbridge. The school will open with two reception classes and high quality playground facilities for 60 children.
The school has already appointed two reception class teachers and administrative staff.
Headteacher Donna Weeks said: “We are looking forward to welcoming our first cohort of reception pupils, and have an exciting programme of commemorative activities lined up to recognise the uniqueness of them being founding pupils.”
Bishop Chavasse school was due to open in 2016 but was delayed when the original land purchase fell through.
Trust CEO Ian Bauckham said: “This site is perfect for a school, and is adjacent to new family housing. There are not enough existing school places in Tonbridge, and with new developments coming on stream we are helping to meet demand for excellent school places.”

Cllr Richard Long, a Kent county councilor for Tonbridge, commented: “I am delighted that the Bishop Chavasse School is opening on schedule in time for the start of the new academic year. “Tonbridge has grown and needs the extra places. Although the new school will be a state-funded free school, Kent County Council is fully supportive, and I will do whatever I can to help it flourish.”
