M&S serves up a new store – without clothes

ONE of the country’s largest retailers has announced that its planned new Foodhall in Tonbridge will be opening in time for Christmas.

The Marks and Spencer store, located on the site next to Halfords on Cannon Lane, will open at 10am on Wednesday December 7, bringing 60 jobs to the area.

The new outlet will only sell its own M&S line of food and drink products but there will also be a 48 seater café to tempt shoppers in for a visit.

The opening of the new store by the high street giant comes despite an announcement earlier this month that it intends to close 30 UK stores and convert a further 45 into food only stores.

This is part of a restructure away from its less profitable clothing ranges.

Rumours began circulating last week that the large Tunbridge Wells M&S store may close down, but the company were quick to describe these rumours as ‘pure speculation’.

The store manager for the new Tonbridge Foodhall, Josh Parkes, said: “My colleagues and I can’t wait to welcome local customers. Tonbridge has a brilliant community spirit and I think opening our new store in time for Christmas gives us the perfect opportunity to celebrate with residents at this special time of year.”
