Greg Clark and Wealden MP Nus Ghani have put aside their differences from the EU Referendum campaign to throw their weight behind Theresa May to be the next leader of the Conservative Party and – by implication – Prime Minister.
The neighbouring MPs, who backed different sides during the Referendum, are joined by Sevenoaks MP Michael Fallon in lending support to the Home Secretary.
Announcing her decision on Twitter last Thursday, Ms Ghani – who campaigned for a Brexit vote – said: “I am supporting @TheresaMay2016 as Leader of the @Conservatives and our next Prime Minister, for strong leadership in these historic times.”
She was followed on Monday by Mr Fallon who, along with Mr Clark, backed Remain in the Referendum. In his role as Defence Secretary he has ‘worked closely’ with Mrs May and says she is ‘the right person’ for the task.
He was echoed by Mr Clark, who told the Times: “I will be supporting Theresa May because I believe she will provide the strong leadership and unity our country now needs.”
Meanwhile, Tonbridge MP Tom Tugendhat has said he will not be revealing his preferred choice until the final vote by MPs on the remaining two candidates.
