The flood defences in and around Tonbridge are to be made even stronger if plans to provide funding get full approval from Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council in November.

Councillors at a Cabinet meeting last week voted in favour of a proposal to put £500,000 towards a multi-million pound upgrade.

The package of measures, which includes improving the Leigh Flood Storage Area, were drawn up after the major flooding seen during the Christmas and New Year period of 2013/2014, which made national headlines.

Nicolas Heslop, Leader of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, said: “Councillors were very pleased to see the positive progress towards achieving the much needed flood mitigation project, including improvements to the Leigh Flood Storage Area, a flood protection bund at Hildenborough, and flood mitigation measures at East Peckham.

“They also welcomed the proposal that the council makes a partnership contribution of £500,000 towards the project.

“It was also recognised the contribution, which would be made in 2020/21, is for a scheme costing £24.6million.

“The Cabinet agreed to seek approval of the Full Council on November 1.”
