Completing a six-hour mountain bike challenge helped Matt Bernau towards raising £1,300 for the care home that looked after his sister.
The 28 year old from Tonbridge and his flatmate Ryan Clark, 27, took part in the Brighton Big Dog event and have been amazed by the response to their fundraising.
They took on the challenge in memory of Matt’s sister Stephanie, who died earlier this year, and had been a resident at Sobell Lodge Care Home, Staplehurst, for eight years.
Her brother’s fundraising will go towards providing the facility with a mobile ‘magic carpet’ – which projects videos on an interactive screen to promote movement and independence.
Mr Bernau said the home had done ‘an amazing job’ caring for Stephanie, and felt moved to give something back.
He said: “The support we’ve had is incredible, and we’re really grateful to everyone who has donated.
“The money raised will pay for multi-sensory equipment that gives sound, touch and visual stimulus to residents at Sobell Lodge, a Leonard Cheshire Disability home for disabled adults with high care needs.”
Tracy Haith, the home’s Service Manager added that Stephanie had been a big part of life at Sobell Lodge, and that she had been greatly missed.
She said: “What Matt and Ryan have done is tremendous. The whole family are really supportive of the home and still come to visit the residents here. Having lost a daughter and a sister would have been very difficult, but they still want to help others, it’s amazing.”
