TO celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the formation of Lions clubs worldwide, the Tonbridge branch wanted to provide a lasting contribution for the community.
Numerous ideas were considered; a wishing-well, a pétanque pitch, even a new clock on River Walk. However, after discussions with the borough council and deliberations with their own team, they settled on the provision of a new children’s slide for the sports ground play park.
It would be fulfilling a need as the Council’s leisure team have had numerous requests for a slide that catered for the older children that used the park.
After finding a supplier to install it, it was officially handed over to the community last week [August 16].
Chairman of the Lions Club project team, Mike Fenn said: “Our active fundraising enabled us to provided £5000 towards the project.
“We are grateful to other contributors, Kent County Council, Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council and the Tonbridge Town Lands and Richard Mylls Charity for helping us bring the project to a successful conclusion.
“We believe the new slide will prove to be a welcome addition to the excellent equipment already in place.”
Tonbridge was the first Lions Club to be established in the UK in 1949 and is now one of the largest in the UK.
