A SCOUT from Hadlow, near Tonbridge, has become the first from her troop to be invited to attend the World Scout Jamboree, and is raising money to fund her trip next year.
Ellie Bristow, 13, is a member of the Sixth Tonbridge [Hadlow] Scout troop – and was chosen by Tonbridge District to be its representative. She is relishing the opportunity to go on what she describes as a ‘once in a lifetime, amazing trip’ in July 2019.
Ellie has been a Scout for five years and said: “I’ve loved every minute of it. One of the reasons I love Scouts so much is bec-ause you get to meet new people all the time and make new friends everywhere you go, and I enjoy all the fantastic opportunities and activities that we are given.”
Ellie has taken part in many community events, including litter picks, the senior citizens’ Easter lunch at Hadlow College, conservation activities and tree planting.
She added: “I am very lucky to be selec-ted to go to the World Scout Jamboree as no one from my troop has ever been – as far as any of the leaders can remember!”
The Jamboree takes place in different countries around the world, but is only staged every four years.
Next year it will be held over three weeks at The Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia, United States. There will be 45,000 scouts attending from 200Â countries.
“We will also get the opportunity to go to Washington or New York, and spend time in Canada during our visit,” said Ellie.
“I cannot wait to go. The Jamboree will be an amazing place to work on my self-confidence, make so many new friends – and many amazing memories to go with them.”
Tonbridge District has put forward £1,000Â towards the fundraising, and Ellie is trying to raise £2,500 to cover the rest of the costs.
Her mother, Catherine, said: “Scouting has helped shape Ellie into the person she is today. The opportunities that the young people have available to them is second to none – microlighting, water fun days and summer camps they partake in, just being a few to mention.
“It all widens their friendships, teaches them practical skills and massively increases their confidence. In return the young people get out and about in the local community.”
She added: As a family, we couldn’t be prouder of Ellie – even slightly envious! To be picked from a group of 25 young people that went to the selection camp to represent her district, is an honour.”
