Gym gets in a spin over Poppy Appeal

A Tonbridge gym is asking the town’s residents to put their stamina to the test to raise money for the Poppy Appeal.

Peak Fitness is holding a sponsored 18-hour ‘Spinathon’ on November 11 to drum up funds for the annual charity fundraiser, which supports military personnel, past and present.

The event challenges people to continuously pedal on exercise bikes and was started in 2014, to mark 100 years since the beginning of the Great War.

Organiser Julie Poole said: “We started with people doing 12 hours and worked out if we added three hours to the Spinathon each year, we would get to 24 hours by the centenary of the end of the war, 2018.

“I did the whole 15 hours last year.”

Ms Poole, who served in the Royal Navy, has helped raise £5,000 over the past two years and is determined to keep the wheels of momentum spinning by encouraging ‘anyone who can get on a bike’ to join in.

The Tonbridge Poppy Appeal is this year being organised by Flood Warden Carl Lewis, who took on the task after the closing of the town’s Royal British Legion branch. He says he has seen an upsurge in volunteers since last month’s Times appeal.

With his team in place, and support from local cadets, he is confident the launch of the campaign will go smoothly this weekend.
