POOR road surfaces in Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge are set to be repaired as part of a £5.2million pothole blitz being carried out by Kent County Council [KCC].
Starting this month and running up to Christmas, highways teams are set to patch up roads in a move which has been welcomed by the AA and Cycling UK.
The County Hall Cabinet member for highways, Malcolm Balfour, said: “Potholes are one of the biggest bugbears for our residents and remain one of our top priorities each year.
“We’ve got local crews working on filling potholes who know their areas, and this year we’ve extended the scheme up until Christmas to ensure our roads are ready for the winter months ahead.”
The additional investment comes after KCC spending of £2.7million to fill an estimated
133,600 potholes already this year.
AA spokesman Luke Bosdet said: “It is a good idea to tackle potholes at the beginning
of winter.
“If a pothole damages a car, the owners can claim compensation. It can cost £40 to repair a pothole but car repairs can cost hundreds of pounds, so they know it makes sense.”
A spokesman for Cycling UK added: “Potholes remain a very serious issue on UK roads.
“While potholes can cause damage to vehicles, a collision with a pothole while on a bike can result in serious injury or even death.
“It is great to see Kent County Council proactively addressing the pothole problem.”
