Five choirs to sing out at New Beacon Centre in aid of hospice

Lee Colyer

THE choirs of Leigh Primary School, Walthamstow Hall Senior School, King’s Rochester, The New Beacon School and Hospice in the Weald are combining to raise funds for the hospice.

The 250 singers will perform Alexander L’Estrange’s cantata, ‘Ahoy! Sing for the Mary
Rose’ on Friday October 13 at 7pm at the recently opened New Beacon Centre in Sevenoaks, and the composer will conduct them himself.

The work was commissioned by Portsmouth Festivities and Portsmouth Grammar School to mark the renovation of the Tudor ship, The Mary Rose. The Headmaster of Portsmouth Grammar, James Priory, who will be taking over as the new head at Tonbridge School next year, is providing the narration.

The cantata is based on Tudor melodies, folk songs and sea shanties, and the choir will be accompanied by a small band featuring the accordion, double bass, drums and violinists. For tickets visit www.newbeacon.org.uk
