The 28th race, organised by the Tonbridge Lions Club, will be held on Bank Holiday Monday [May 6] at Tonbridge School Sports Centre.

The Lions were given permission by the British Triathlon Federation to offer the new initiative, called Go Tri, for the first time in Kent.

The shortened race is for those who want a relatively easy introduction to the sport.

Each distance is a quarter of the standard length  – a 200m swim, 14km cycle course and 2.5km run.

No specialist equipment is required, the event is for over-18s only, and the entry fee is £15.

All proceeds go to a variety of charitable causes, including Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex, Hospice in the Weald and Libra [Lions International Blood Research Appeal].

The Lions have donated over £275,000 to charity since the first event in 1991, and hopes to raise a further £15,000 this year.

The club is also planning to offer initial basic training at the school’s Sports Centre.

There are also Standard, Sprint [half-Standard] and relay team triathlons on offer.
