Rugby: Skinners’ Old Boys squeeze to narrow victory over Tunbridge Wells

Old Boys dig deep to secure bragging rights
Rugby - Tunbridge Wells All Stars v Skinners' Old Boys

SKINNERS’ Old Boys have the bragging rights over their local club after a fiercely contested Boxing Day friendly organised by Fran Colangelo and Cameron Corcoran.

The match raised hundreds of pounds for the charity Prostate Cancer UK, thanks to sponsorship from Rob Greig and Nortrade.

Harry Sloan and Craig Flemming were in charge of the SOB team with Mav Anderson and Alex Nicholson managing the All Stars.

The All Stars took advantage of some early SOB mistakes with Alex Maynard showing he has lost none of his speed to race in down the wing for the first try.

The home forwards won quick ball and fast hands saw Harvey Colangelo feed his fellow ex-Academy player Jake Smith for the second try and a 10-0 lead.

SOB then started to get into the game, it was fast and furious and the hits were uncompromising with Duncan Colfe taking no prisoners in midfield.

The All Stars became stretched and eventually conceded a try as Corcoran crossed and converted to reduce the lead to 10-7.

Tunbridge Wells struck back in the last play of the half. Rob Harrison picked and drove from close range to score and Charlie Rigby added the conversion for a 17-7 lead at the interval.

The second half saw SOB expose gaps in the All Stars defence with Max Douch now at scrum-half and he went over for an uncoverted try.

The All Stars put on a huge defensive effort to stop a rampaging SOB but Colfe broke through and Corcoran slotted the conversion to take a 17-19 lead with five minutes to go.

The All Stars worked their way upfield and with just seconds left on the clock they showed the true spirit of rugby, spurned a kick at goal to go for the try.

They edged ever closer and Tom Follows dived for the line under a pile of bodies but the score was inconclusive and SOB were able to clear their lines and secure victory.
