Hockey: Tunbridge Wells made to wait for Winchester winner

TUNBRIDGE WELLS secured a crucial win in their bid to launch a push for promotion in South Premier League Division One.

They started poorly with a series of turnovers and sloppy marking. Winchester won a number of short corners and scored with the help of a deflection from the fourth of them.

Wells reaction was positive, and great stick work by Sam George on the right wing led to Ben Allberry being brought down in the circle.

Allberry himself put away the penalty to level the scores going into half-time.

The second half started scrappily and Wells were once again their own worst enemy. Trying to do too much with the ball, Winchester turned over possession and scored on the break.

Finally Wells started to find their shape and pile on the pressure.

A neat interchange down the left side between Aaron Leadbeater and George saw a well placed ball across goal that was deflected in by James Lester to level the scores again.

With three minutes left on the clock, great vision by Ant Dalrymple found Leadbeater on the left with an excellent crossfield ball.

With a quick hit across goal, George nipped in front of the keeper and with a slight deflection found a way to guide the ball past him, on to a defender’s foot and over the line.

After a long discussion between the umpires, the goal was allowed to stand and Wells held on to win a dramatic encounter.

Tunbridge Wells’ next game is against Banbury at Kent College, Pembury on Saturday (February 2, 2pm start).
