TONBRIDGE ANGELS upset the form book to end a run of six games without a win.

They beat a Kingstonian side who had not lost in the Bostik League Premier since December 1 – the last time the Angels had won.

The home side took the lead after 10 minutes when new signing Chinedu McKenzie fed the ball to his fellow striker Alex Read, who flicked it past Kingstonian goalkeeper Rob Tolfrey.

The Angels doubled their advantage on 27 minutes when Reid turned provider with a pass to Joe Turner, whose shot from the edge of the area nestled in the corner of the net.

Kingstonian responded by scoring twice, equalising on the stroke of half-time.

Tonbridge were caught out by a short corner routine with Dean Inman producing the header, and then with hardly time to draw breath Shaun McAuley scored again.

The second half saw the Angels create more chances with the pairing of Read and McKenzie posing plenty of problems.

The winner came in the 71st minute when a free kick was fumbled by Tolfrey and McKenzie forced the ball over the line from close range.

Tonbridge now travel to Bishop’s Stortford on Saturday [January 19, kick-off 3pm].

Farewell to the ‘Wizard’

Tommy Whitnell, the midfielder known as the ‘Wizard’, has been released by the Angels.

One of Steve McKimm’s first signings in 2014, he made 177 appearances and scored 17 goals.

McKimm said: “This is one of the most difficult jobs a manager has to to do, letting go a loyal and dedicated member of the team.

“Recent signings coming in have meant we have had to manage the budget accordingly.

“Tommy has always shown me the utmost respect in all my dealings with him and will certainly be missed in the dressing room.”
