Football: Tonbridge Angels remain on top despite conceding first goal of season

TONBRIDGE ANGELS continued their unbeaten start to the Bostik Premier League season and remained on top of the table but they finally conceded a goal in the sixth outing – and suffered an injury to Tom Beere.

Playmaker Beere was taken off on a stretcher in the 19th minute after landing badly on his knee but he is expected to recover soon.

Wingers Adem Ramadan and Joe Turner were in fine form, causing problems throughout the game for the Wingate defence.

The first goal came in the 32nd minute, with Jack Parter’s cross meeting captain Tom Parkinson’s head to put the Angels 1-0 up.

The second came just six minutes later, with a good free-kick by Turner being headed off the underside of the crossbar and into the net by centre-back Sonny Miles.

Tonbridge’s run of five clean sheets came to an end on the stroke of half time, with Tommy Tejan-Sie putting the ball past Jonny Henly from a short corner.

Wingate looked brighter in the opening stages of the second half, but Tonbridge woke up and threatened with many chances.

Runs by James Folkes, Turner and Ramadan troubled the defence, and Tommy Whitnell came agonisingly close to scoring late on.

Manager Steve McKimm said: “We created lots of chances. We gave away a sloppy goal but all in all I’m over the moon.

“The scoreline could have been a lot more but I’m very pleased with the boys’ application. We dominated possession and it was comfortable.”

Angels’ next league fixture is at Hythe Town on Saturday [September 8, kick-off 3pm].
