Football: Rusthall up for the cup as Strachan adds finishing touch

Rusthall 3 Wick 0

RUSTHALL can dream of cup glory and big paydays from the Football Association after they romped to victory over Wick in the FA Cup extra-preliminary round.

The result completed an excellent week for the Rustics after their 3-1 victory over local rivals Crowborough Athletic in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division.

Alex Carey played a sublime through ball to put Right-back Tom Cameron in on goal after 12 minutes and he swept his right-footed shot into the bottom corner from 15 yards.

Callum Ridley intercepted a pass on the half-hour and drove through the heart of the pitch before lashing a shot over the crossbar.

Midfielder Carey deservedly doubled the home side’s lead five minutes after the break with a clinical finish from 25 yards into the top corner.

Then home-grown 18-year-old striker Callum Strachan came off the bench and scored the third goal two minutes from the end, set up by another young prospect in Regan Corke.

Joint-manager Andrew McKechnie said: ‘The two young lads were brilliant – Regan laid it on a plate for Callum.

‘He’s a local lad, came through the youth and the reserves side, so that goal was very pleasing. It was nothing more than what we deserved.’

Rusthall now return to league action at Deal Town on Saturday [August 18, kick-off 3pm].
