Football: Coach Murray promoted but Rusthall pay for early error
BOUNCING BACK: Steve Camacho (centre) vies for the ball while Lynos Rwodzi looks on

FIRST-team coach Alan Murray has been appointed as assistant manager of the Rustics following the resignation of Mike Cramp after the 9-1 defeat to Cray Valley.

He joins manager Andrew McKechnie and brings a wealth of experience to the role, having played professional football in Scotland. Murray’s coaching methods are greatly admired by the management and players.

After a much needed weekend off, however, a lapse in concentration early on in their first meeting with Fisher decided what was otherwise a very even contest.

In the third minute a cheap corner was given away by the home side. The set-piece was initially cleared but the ball was sent back into the box and Paul Geddis put it into the top of the net over the stranded goalkeeper Joe Cullip.

In the wake of the Cray Valley debacle, it might have been expected that Rusthall’s heads would drop after such an early setback.

However, the players dug in and for the remainder of the first half they matched Fisher in every department. The defences were dominant and there was little goalmouth action.

Rusthall were the better team in the second half and deserved an equaliser.

Charlie Sharman was put through on goal with only the keeper to beat after a neat interchange with Steve Camacho but he could not convert the opportunity, while an effort from Camacho was also saved.

Rusthall’s defence remained vigilant throughout the game and Robbie Bissett was commanding while Lynos Rwodzi excelled on his first-team debut.
