Cycling: Kuwertz leads SDW riders home

THE Southborough & District Wheelers [SDW] were in blistering form for the club’s 25-mile time trial near Petersfield, Hampshire.

On a fast course at the event run by Fareham Wheelers, Matt Kuwertz took the club championship in 53min 25sec.

He narrowly held off spirited challenges from Rob Stephenson (54.29), David Rumm (54.39), Dave Bagge (58.03) and Paul Greer (59.07).

In the East Sussex Cycling Association 50-mile event, held near Maresfield, Neil Couchman recorded a time of 1hr 5min 6sec to set a personal best and finish sixth overall.

Pip Jenkins has improved the club’s 100-mile time trial record by more than three minutes.

She covered the Kent Cycling Association course on Romney Marsh in 4:13.16 to break a record that has stood since 1981.

The club was well represented in the Tour of Cambridge UCI world championship qualifiers.

Racing over a quick 80-mile course in a field of 1,287 riders, Simon Miller finished 65th overall, followed by Richard Curtis (579th); Alasdair Fraser (668th), Jeffrey Perkins (812th) and Colin Jarman (889th and fourth in the Over 70 category).

Miller, Curtis, Perkins and Jarman have all now qualified to represent Great Britain at the UCI world championships to be held in Varese, Italy in September.

Natasha Jarman also took part in the Chrono Time Trial event, finishing 86th in the female category.
