Cricket: Cowdrey’s Yeats-Brown stages recovery to leave leaders Harvel humbled

COWDREY registered a comprehensive and much-needed win against the leaders of Kent League Division Three at Swanmead.

The Tonbridge side were starting to look down the table at the relegation zone on the back of three narrow defeats.

Ryan Addison won the toss and chose to bat first but the hosts soon encountered problems against Robert McSweeney (4 for 53) and were reduced to 35 for 3 after six overs.

However, Xavier Yeats-Brown stepped up to play an excellent innings in difficult circumstances, sharing a partnership of 94 with Minhaj Jalill (38) to stage a decent recovery.

The opener eventually fell for 84 off 123 balls with 13 fours and a six but the cudgels were taken up by his brother Ralph, who raced to 35 off 26 balls.

Oscar Holmes chipped with an unbeaten 27 at better than a run a ball and the home side managed to post an imposing total of 235 for 9.

The tall and fiery fast bowler Nick Farr produced his best to thwart the early run-chase, generating pace and good bounce and ably supported by swing bowler Thom Brown.

The introduction of Jalill’s off-spin turned the screws and he picked up 2 for 14 off eight overs, including the obdurate opener Ben Paterson caught and bowled for 36.

Both opening bowlers were brought back and blew away the tail, Farr returning impressive figures of 4 for 24 while Brown took 2 for 30, and Harvel were all out 115 in 34.3 overs.

Cowdrey are sitting in seventh place in the table, their third win of the season lifting them 14 points above the relegation zone.

Now they travel to Gravesend, who are one place and six points above them, on Saturday (July 20).
