Cricket: Cowdrey's Fenwick puts Walmer under his spell

Rainham 190 lost to Cowdrey 194-4 by 6 wkts

TOP-of-the-table Cowdrey cruised to victory at fourth-placed Rainham, extending their lead in Kent League Division Four thanks to a century from Australian Ashley Borella.

The visitors lost the toss at Berengrove Park but Cowdrey’s opening attack of Chris Fenwick and Thom Brown bowled with discipline.

The introduction of spinner Ralph Yeats-Brown, fresh from Swansea University, brought about the downfall of Australian import Matt Bench for 44.

The runs dried up and wickets fell at regular intervals, with Borella taking 2 for 22 while Neil McCue (51) played the anchor role.

Fenwick (3 for 33) returned to blow away the tail as Rainham were dismissed for 190, Jack Mutch picking up five catches behind the stumps.

Harvey Crump and Oliver Lea extracted bounce from the quick track and Cowdrey were soon tottering on 42 for 3.

Borella was dropped at cover on 25 and after the let-off he set about the change bowling, registering his second league hundred.

He finished unbeaten on 115 with 20 fours and three sixes as Cowdrey reached 194 for 4 with more than 17 overs remaining.

Cowdrey now look to extend their lead further at home to Hythe on Saturday [July 7].
