Cricket: All Smiles as Shehzad leads Tonbridge romp

Stoinis and Donald arrive to boost Kent's fortunes

Old Colfeians 97 lost to Tonbridge 100-1 by 9 wkts

TONBRIDGE moved up to second place in Kent League Division Four to keep up the pressure on local rivals Cowdrey with a easy win at bottom-of-the-table Old Colfeians.

The visiting captain Matt Smiles opted to field first and wreaked the early wreckage, grabbing 3 for 30 to leave the home side on 26 for 4.

Old Colfeians skipper Matt Lorimer looked to counterattack but fell to a moment of magic as Ben Morgan held on to a stunning one-handed catch in the gully.

The introduction of Shehzad brothers kept up the pressure and Nadeem (4 for 22) was a handful with his full, accurate line.

The visitors were dismissed for a paltry 97 and Tonbridge made short work of the run-chase despite the pitch starting to offer some variable bounce, Chirag Patel (46) striking a huge six in the first over.

His opening partner Stephen Hall played the support act against his old side, and the pair brought up a 50-partnership in the 14th over.

When Patel fell to one big shot too many, the damage had already been done. Hall unfurled some pull and cut shots to see Tonbridge home in the 22nd over, remaining unbeaten on 40.

Tonbridge move back into second place, just nine points adrift of Cowdrey.

Now they face a long trip to Walmer on Saturday [June 30].
