The time for adventure draws near

CHILDREN waiting in anticipation for the new Calverley Adventure Playground will not have to wait much longer to clamber the nets, wiz down the slides and ride the swing, with the opening date announced for September 18.

Rapid progress has been made by playground developers Timberplay in installing the play equipment since the Friends of Calverley Grounds-led initiative hit its £225,000 funding target in March.

Built on the site of a former bowling green, abandoned in 2005, the design for the play area was drawn up by local resident and award-winning landscape architect, Jennette Emery-Wallis, who has spent two years advocating the project.

Numerous events were held in aid of raising money for the playground, culminating in the staging of two variety performances at the Assembly Hall, which featured more than 300 acts.

There will also be a Community Wall in the grounds, featuring the names of donors, which has raised £21,000. It is designed by Gordon Young, who also created Blackpool’s Comedy Carpet and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park’s Walk of Words.
