Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” is one of the most loved and well known operas ever, but it’s first night was a disaster. A series of calamities – a cat on the stage, a singer tripping over a loose board and ending up with a bloodied nose – had the hostile audience booing (and meowing!) throughout so that the music could hardly be heard. On the second night Rossini locked himself in his room and had to be coaxed out to receive the standing ovation. Since then it has rarely failed to please audiences.
The music is incredibly familiar – possibly because as children we all saw the Bugs Bunny version. The opening overture is instantly memorable, and so typical of Rossini who was nicknamed Signor Crescendo, the violins start slowly but then set off at a full gallop like race horses. You’re never more than a short recitative away from another wonderful aria.
The New Garden Opera Company have been bringing opera to new audiences throughout the UK since 1994 and have performed at Lamberhurst on more than one occasion. The gates open at 5.30pm when you are invited to bring a picnic, family and friends and enjoy a, hopefully, wonderful sunny evening. The opera will begin at 7.30pm and have a 45-minute interval.
The opera will be sung in English and in the event of poor weather, so that the opera cannot be performed, a full refund will be given.
