Southborough cycling club hits 90 years old

To mark the club’s 90th celebrations, SDW are working with other local clubs, retailers and the Town Council to launch the Tunbridge Wells Cycling Festival this Saturday (June 11).

Held in Calverley Grounds on June 11 from 10am to 4pm, with cycling displays, exhibitions and activities for all, the town-wide initiative is a joint venture with other cycling clubs, retailers and the town council, making it a fun day out for the whole family.

The festival organisers aim to encourage safe, inclusive, and enjoyable cycling for people of all ages in our local community – but, with the gravity-defying performance of BMX stunt team Savage Skills, there will be thrills alongside the emphasis on safety.

SWD’s celebrations have also taken on an international dimension, with committee member Simon Miller having visited Southborough’s twin town of Lambersart, just outside of Lille, France.

There he met Jean-Michel Pannecoucke, Chair of the Lambersart Twinning Association, which is also celebrating 30 years of partnership between Southborough and High Brooms.

Simon made a presentation of a 90th anniversary plaque and Southborough cycling cap to the town’s Mayor and Deputy Mayor, at the beautiful neo-classical Mairie de Lambersart (City Hall).

He also met the secretary of the Cyclo-Club de Lambersart, Claude Kieffer, to discuss opportunities for the two clubs ride together during the 90th anniversary year, and beyond.
