Open air cinema coming to Dunorlan Park

Luna Cinema, which already holds screenings at Tonbridge Castle in July, is planning to host a children’s summer movie event in Dunorlan Park this year.

While the company has not officially announced the park as being among the planned 175 outdoor screenings up and down the country in their 2019 season, they have submitted a Licensing Application to Tunbridge Wells Borough Council to hold open air screenings at the Pembury Road park in August.

Yesterday the council confirmed the license application was being dealt with for ‘Luna Kids Cinema’, which is to be held over five days from August 7 to August 11.

And a spokesperson for the Luna Cinema confirmed their intentions to hold the event in Tunbridge Wells, which they say is aimed at entertaining children in the six week holidays.

While the licensing application is yet to be approved by Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, the summer screenings could make up for the loss of the drive-in cinema at the Hop Farm, which ended after the firm that put on the event, Moonlight Cinema, ran into financial difficulties and collapsed at the end of last year

By comparison, the Tonbridge Castle event has proved immensely popular with cinema fans.

Hundreds gathered in the castle grounds last year to watch productions such as The Greatest Showman, the musical biopic starring High Jackman as circus founder P T Barnum, and the Oscar winning story of Freddie Mercury, Bohemian Rhapsody, and similar numbers are expected in Tonbridge this year.

George Wood, founder of The Luna Cinema, said: “We are hugely excited to be announcing our 2019 season, our biggest year of open-air cinema yet. With the incredible number of great films released in the last 12 months, it’s shaping up to be a really special one.

“Following last year’s phenomenal outdoor success with The Greatest Showman, we were hoping for a good crop of musical films and in A Star Is Born, Mary Poppins Returns, Bohemian Rhapsody and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, we got exactly that.

“We look forward to expanding our children’s outdoor cinema brand ‘Luna Kids Cinema’ this summer, to visiting some incredible new venues far and wide from Yorkshire to Greenwich and to welcoming film fans from across the country for a night of cinema under the stars.”
