Lottery gets off to a winning start as charities join up

Charities set to hit the jackpot as new borough lotto takes off

MORE than 30 charities have signed up to the Tunbridge Wells Lottery, with the first tickets going on sale today (June 14).

Charities, volunteer groups and good causes are hoping to be the recipients of thousands of pounds in donations from lotto player’s choosing their organisation to support.

Those signed up so far include Brenchley Pre-School, Rusthall Community Cinema, the Pickering Cancer Drop-in Centre and Tunbridge Wells Mental Health Resource.

Polly Taylor of Pickering said they had signed up to the online lotto in order to help keep the charity financially viable, adding: “This is a really great opportunity for everyone to play their part in supporting local charites and in our case help keep the door of the centre open for the 3,000 people we help each year, whose lives have been touched by cancer.”

“Not only can it help charities raise funds, but it will also raise awareness of what they do and hopefully lead to more people coming forward as volunteers.”

The opening draw for the £25,000 jackpot that the public can win, will take place on July 8, although tickets are available from today, with 60p in every £1 going to local good causes.

Those causes that sign up are given their own page on the website outlining what they are all about. They have the option of publicly displaying funding targets – similar to those found on website such as Justgiving – so that donors have a target to aim for.

The council model is similar to that used by neighbouring Tonbridge and Malling, who launched their Hive Lotto in September.

Cabinet member Councillor Jane March said: “TW Lotto is off to a good start with over 30 organisations indicating that they want to join in. This is great news and I hope others will want to sign up too.”
