Hospital Radio to offer ball-by-ball commentary on local cricket festival

HOSPITAL RADIO Tunbridge Wells will be providing live commentary of the town’s Cricket Festival later this month.

With the support of Invicta Motors and Kent County Cricket Club, cricket fans – whether in hospital or not – will be able to follow the four-day County Championship game between Kent and Sussex from May 26-29.

The station’s commentary team of Chris Woodward, Chris Reed, Joe Mendell, Tim Godsalve and Jerome Beadle will be based in the pavilion at the Nevill Ground and provide ball-by-ball coverage.

The service, which starts at 10.30am each day and ends at the close of play, will be available to patients in the Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury and Tonbridge Cottage Hospital.

Followers around the country will also able to hear it online via the station’s website at hrtw.org.uk or via the TuneIn app on mobile and tablet devices.

Chris Woodward said: “We are pleased to be able to provide commentary on the four-day match again this year. Our thanks to Kent County Cricket Club for allowing us to attend and to Invicta Motors for sponsoring our coverage again.”

There was some doubt at the festival last year that the radio team would be able to return because the charity, which has just celebrated its 50th anniversary, faced closure due to a lack of funds to meet its expenses.

But thanks to a massive fundraising effort by volunteers, with the support of the community, Kent County Council and local businesses the service is guaranteed for at least a few more years.

Station Manager Chris Manser said: “We have now signed the lease to remain in the studios for the next four years and we are now starting to look at ways to extend our service to other outlets, to make all the time and effort our volunteers invest in keeping the service running even more worthwhile.”
