Gym’s fitness challenge to help Tunbridge Wells hospital

Énergie Fitness, at the Enterprise Centre in North Farm Road, are inviting members of the public to participate from August 28-31.

The challenge is based on the distance between Land’s End and John O’ Groats, which is 847 miles and is known as LEJOG.

Ray Betts, General Manager at Énergie Fitness, said: “Our aim is to get people to cover the distance in a number of ways – by running, rowing, cross-training or cycling.

“We chose it because it can be done in any measurable way and it’s easy to track how far you’ve gone.

“People of all ages and abilities will be able to take part in it, and make a donation – even if it’s just a pound.”

He added: “I’ve got many friends who have done LEJOG events, including Sean Conway, who’s the only man to swim the length of Britain. But this is something that anyone can do.”

He is trying to raise £4,000, and the hospital is seeking £8,000 overall.

Marks & Spencer at The Fountains Retail Park have helped out with a static bike on site for customers to clock up some miles.

The Énergie event is also being backed by other local companies, including Toni and Guy, Chimera Climbing, The Body Shop and Waterstones.

Ray, who has just been chosen to be part of The Bear Grylls Adventure team, has received an endorsement from renowned explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

He sent a message saying: “All the very best to everyone taking part and supporting the fundraiser to raise money for a new bladder scanner unit for the NHS.”

Laura Kennedy, MTW’s Fundraising Manager, said: “Good luck to the Énergie Fitness team taking on this fantastic challenge!

“We are delighted that every one of the team’s 847 miles will be supporting our charity. We hope local people will get behind them.

“Charity donations really do make a difference to Tunbridge Well Hospital. A special thanks goes to Ray for his support.”
