Late-night shoppers can take advantage of free parking in the run-up to Christmas.

As part of a campaign to promote Tunbridge Wells as ‘the leading destination town for all things Christmas’, the borough council is lifting charges in all its car parks from 4pm, every weekday from December 17 to 23.

A programme of festive events has also been arranged, including the return of the ice rink to Calverley Grounds, from November 20 until January 3.

Father Christmas will also be on hand, at a ‘festive frozen grotto’ in Royal Victoria Place, every day from 4.30pm on Thursday, November 19. This will be followed by the switching-on of the Christmas lights at 6.30pm, with the cast of Assembly Hall pantomime Cinderella.

The centre is also hosting a Black Friday shopping event on November 27, from 8am to 8pm, with free parking from 4pm.

On December 17, there will be a High Street Christmas event until 9pm, for which businesses in the High Street, Grove Hill Road and Chapel Place will ‘unite to create a truly magical experience with carol singers, festive drinks and nibbles’.

Cllr Jane March, Tunbridge Wells Borough Council cabinet member for tourism and leisure, said: “The Christmas period is vital to all the town centre businesses. The council is delighted to support this initiative by offering free parking and adding to the town’s attractions with the ice rink.”
