A wacky homemade shed on wheels was the centre of attention last week at the launch of the Crazy Jeans charity soapbox derby.
Businesses are being urged to sign up for the family day event that will see carts race down pathways at Donora Park on Saturday May 5.
The owner of Jean’s Kitchen & Wine Bar on St John’s Road, Garry Jeffery, is behind the derby that is expected to attract 10,000 spectators.
Teams between four and six will push and steer the carts down a hill before taking to the lake in pedals and being sprayed with water as part of a day of fun set to raise raise thousands for Hospice in the Weald and ellenor.
Celebrity chef Rosemary Shrager, who attended the launch at Jean’s Kitchen, said: “I usually see these races on TV and I love them.
“I do a lot of charity events but one thing about them is that it’s very hard to raise money for charity, especially with so many of them.
“But to get a community coming together for two such great causes is a major success.
“There is going to be a real buzz about this, I’m so honoured to be a part of it.”
The event follows a time-trial format with the day culminating in the four fastest teams going head to head in a grand finale.
A smaller inter-schools competition for 16-18 year olds will be held on the morning of the event. There is also a stage of live music, a super car display and zip wire.
Event organiser Nicole Piesse-Turner of Chatty Hatter said: “The response from the public so far has been phenomenal.
“This is set to be one of the most exciting and innovative community events Tunbridge Wells has seen and there really is something for everyone.”
