The Bennett Music Academy is currently preparing for an exciting tour of Austria, following an outstanding success in a national music competition.

On Sunday March 13 students belonging to the Bennett Brandenburg Sinfonia made their way to Pamoja Concert Hall, at Sevenoaks School, to perform in the finals of the National Pro Corda Music Competition.

Competing against them were music ensembles from Eton, Uppingham, Charterhouse, Brighton College, Sevenoaks School and Perse. Bennett Memorial was the only state secondary school to go through to the final of this prestigious competition.

Two pieces were performed – a version of Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles and then a selection of songs from West Side Story by Bernstein. In the final moments of their performance the audience broke into huge applause for the young musicians.

After some deliberation by the judges, the Bennett Music Academy were pronounced to be the winners. Paul Showell, Director of Music at Bennett, said, “It was a truly magnificent achievement by such brilliant musicians. Well done to them all.”

The Brandenburg Sinfonia will be joining with other music students from the Bennett Music Academy to undertake a tour of Austria in the last week of the summer term. Together with the Bennett Chamber Choir, they will be performing a series of open air concerts in Salzburg and Zell Am See, as well as enjoying visits to historical and cultural sites such as Mozart’s Residence, the Hohensalzburg Fortress and the Salt Mines at Berchtesgaden.
