Children as young as four years enjoyed the challenge of the conditions, wallowing in mud and splashing in puddles on their way around the gruelling course.

Head of Prep at the East Sussex school, Gavin Bunker, was among the runners and said: “The spirit of Claremont was certainly out in force today. The grit and determination the runners showed in pursuit of the finish line was truly humbling.”

He added: “Inspired by loved ones lost, a will to affect change and unwavering support for each other, the children battled the elements and all the challenges the Claremont cross-country course has to offer on a normal day.

“When tired legs set in, the children picked each other up – sometimes literally – and encouraged their friends to stay focused on the task at hand and carry on all the way to the finish line.”
