The event at the Town Hall was also attended by the borough’s Mayor, Cllr James Scholes, the Mayoress Jane Scholes and Deputy Lieutenant of Kent Georgie Warner.

The guests heard the Mayor read a letter from the Commonwealth Secretary-General, and the Commonwealth Affirmation.

The annual event was held on March 9, centering on the theme ‘Delivering a Common Future’.

The event takes place in countries across the Commonwealth, and once the affirmation has been performed, the Commonwealth Flag is raised.

As the flag was raised on the roof of the Town Hall, the children unfurled another flag on the steps at the front of the municipal building.

After the ceremony the children joined the Mayor and Mayoress in the Council chamber for refreshments and to learn more about the role of the Mayor.

Children from the following schools attended the ceremony: Beechwood, Bidborough, Bishops Down, Broadwater, Claremont, Holmewood House, Kent College Pembury, St Augustine’s,
St John’s and Temple Grove Academy.
